ANNOUNCEMENTS

Movies by Starlight: Shine on Black Stories every Thursday in September!

We’ll be launching a month-long movie series, Movies by Starlight: Shine on Black Stories, featuring films significant to Black history.

Evenings will start at 8 pm with a Q&A discussion, led by Theodore M. Shaw, UNC Law School Julius L. Chambers Distinguished Professor of Law and the Director of the UNC Center for Civil Rights. Portions of the proceeds will go to the NAACP Defense Fund

We’ve worked with community leaders to curate this special schedule, consisting of:
  • September 3: “Harriet”
  • September 10: “Selma”
  • September 17:“Just Mercy”
  • September 24: “The Hate U Give”

We believe very strongly that all Black lives matter, and that we need to use our platform to amplify these important works, support our marginalized community members and keep the conversations – however uncomfortable they may be – going. We want to do our part to be a venue for equality as a movement, not just a moment.

As with all Movies by Starlight, protocol is in place to ensure the safety of all guests and staff. Complete safety guidelines are available on The Lumina website.

Tickets are available online only. One ticket buys one 9’x8’ seating pod, which holds up to 5 people. The first two rows are blanket-only seating. You may bring your own food and beverages (no glass).

Movies by Starlight: We’re baaack!

June 25, 2020

We’re so excited to announce that The Southern Village Market Street Association Movies by Starlight, presented by The Lumina Theater, is now playing!

Movies will be shown Friday and Saturday nights through September. New for 2020, we will be playing Tuesday and Thursday movies as well.

Tickets are available online in advance only, under Now Playing. One ticket is good for one 9 ft by 9 ft seating “pod,” which holds up to 5 people. The first 2 rows are blanket seating only.

Although concessions have not been present at past Lumina outdoor movie showings, this summer will feature popcorn, ice cream, candy, and soft drinks at the Concession Stand. Guests may also bring in their own food, but please, no glass bottles.

In accordance with safety guidelines set forth by the state of NC for its Phase 2 reopening, The Lumina also has worked with the Orange County Health Department to create a safe environment for moviegoers on the Southern Village Market Street Green. Details of this plan are on our Movie by Starlight page.

See you soon. We’ll be back.

March 18, 2020

Dear The Lumina Family,

Thank you for the support you’ve shown The Lumina historically and as it has transitioned to new ownership. The Lumina team cares deeply about our community, guests and employees, and we have made the difficult decision to close to ensure we are doing our part to slow the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

During this time, we plan to renovate our lobby and begin the process of updating theater seating and adding eat-in and take-out pizza. We remain committed to bringing a new and improved Lumina Theater to Chapel Hill in the near future.

To our guests, colleagues, and friends – we wish you the best, and we look forward to serving you again soon. If you would like to show your love in the meantime gift cards are available online here.

As always, thank you for your support.
